What We Do in the Shadows (Astra Militarum, Dark Angels and Inquisition vs. Ultramarines and Salamanders 1500pts)

The threat of the massive invasion of Hive Fleet Ragnarok looms over the Celentine system, consuming the outer planets while the centre of the system is embroiled in civil war. Excommunicated Malleus inquisitor Alexie Tyranoc strikes a deal with the more pragmatic chapter of the Angels Unforgiven space marines. A small team of Highlanders Rebels and Angels land on the jungle planet of Celentine VII to guard Tyranoc as he summons a massive warp storm to slow the Tyranid advance through the system. A small band of Crimson Watch space marines garrisoned on the planet spot the party as it makes planetfall, and alerts Imperium forces. Inquisitor Greyfax brings an assault force of Lost Paladins to stop Tyranoc’s heresy before he unleashes the warp on Imperial space.

The battlefield: a small Imperial base amidst the dense jungle of Celentine VII. The victory conditions are Regicide, with each unit destroyed worth 1VP, and 5VP for killing either Inquisitor Greyfax or Inquisitor Tyranoc. Tyranoc’s force gets to deploy a forcefield array, while Greyfax’s force gets to deploy two teleporter nodes.

The Highlander’s force. Malleus Inquisitor Alexie Tyranoc and his band of rogues, servitor warriors and daemonhosts leads a force of rebel veterans and armour.

The Angels Unforgiven force. A techmarine leads deathwing terminators, tactical marines and a deadly sicaran venator tank destroyer into battle.

The opposing force consists of the Crimson Watch chapter master Forge Beaconhammer leading a tactical squad and scouts in a landspeeder storm, as well as Inquisitor Greyfax leading Lost Paladins sternguard veterans, assault marines, bikers, and armour in the form of rhino transports, a dreadnought and a vindicator laser destroyer.

A Paladins’ rhino carrying Forge and the Crimson Watch combat squad deploys on the flank next to the first teleporter node, supporting the assault of Paladins’ bikers.

The bikers and laser destroyer take up the centre of the assault, with fire support from Crimson Watch tacticals in the bunker.

On the other flank, Greyfax and the sternguard prepare to assault through the jungle with the dreadnought.

Tyranoc’s force deploys in the canyon, with battle tanks, veterans and marines taking firing positions on the high ground. The venator takes the centre inside the forcefield array, lending cover to Tyranoc’s warband.

Greyfax’s force takes first turn. the bike squad redeploy next to the teleporter node while Forge’s rhino makes forward.

The other bike squad moves for the centre, while the laser destroyer lines up a shot on enemy armour.

Using the jungle as cover, Greyfax’s rhino and the dreadnought move to assault the flank.

The scouts infiltrate forward and start their assault on Tyranoc’s lines.

The scouts unload their shotguns into the veterans, killing half and sending the rest fleeing from the battlefield.

The executioner russ ‘Rogue’ and the tactical squad move to fire on the scouts and their transport.

The venator repositions for a firing line on the laser destroyer, and the rebels take aim.

The venator misses the laser destroyer, but the battle tank ‘Judge’ lands an expert shot with a battle cannon and disables its armament.

Rogue and the marines deal heavy damage to the scouts and their transport.

The Angels’ tacticals land a plasma cannon shot on their Crimson Watch counterparts.

The plasma guns from the inquisitorial henchmen finish off the land speeder storm.

The bikers teleport to the second node on Tyranoc’s flank, while Greyfax and the dreadnought round the jungle to bolster the assault.

Forge’s rhino moves up to support the scouts.

The second bike squad moves to fire on the venator with their melta guns.

The scouts make a last ditch assault on the hill.

The bikes and the tactical marines finish off the venator while the vindicator drives forward.

The veterans take casualties from the dreadnought’s assault cannon.

The centre unit of bikes gun down some henchmen.

The scouts place a melta bomb on Rogue, exploding it and taking out one of their number in the process.

The techmarine climbs the hill to deal with the scout sergeant, taking him apart with his servo arm.

The terminators have their teleportation guided by Tyranoc’s mystic, and his daemonhosts break from the shield to use their demonic powers on the oncoming chapter master.

Judge and the tacticals make ready to fire on the oncoming assault.

The astropath Santo Klaus unleashes a psychic shriek at the bikes, felling the sergeant.

The gunline erupts on Greyfax’s vehicles, busting the rhino and damaging the dreadnought.

The marines gun down a couple of sternguard.

Forge’s rhino unloads its contents behind the cover of the jungle.

The assault marines land using the teleporter node to guide them, and the flank assault led by Greyfax surges forward.

The bikes and laser destroyer push forward to assault Tyranoc.

Greyfax unleashes a psychic shriek strong enough to completely wipe the terminators, but the sergeant takes most of the hits on his storm shield and only one falls.

The sternguard unleash vengeance rounds on the tacticals, killing two but losing one of their number to an overheat.

The dreadnought opens up on the veterans again, leaving only two standing.

The bikers gun down the daemonhosts, but fail to make the charge into Tyranoc’s warband.

With a horde of marines pouring down on them, Tyranoc’s forces on the flank reload and take aim.

Tyranoc pushes forward to assault the bikes and the techmarine joins the terminators to assault the Crimson Watch chapter master.

The veterans regroup in the forcefield array.

A psychic shriek from Santo Klaus, and a laser eye from a robot winged baby finishes off the bikes.

Judge opens up on Greyfax and the sternguard, leaving only the inquisitor standing on one wound.

The terminators fire on the chapter master’s squad, leaving only the sergeant and Forge standing.

The terminators assault, the sergeant challenging Forge to a thunder hammer duel.

Forge slays the sergeant in the challenge, but the rest of the terminators take him down.

Greyfax stays back as the dreadnought, assault marines and bikes charge the hill.

The dreadnought opens up on Tyranoc’s warband, wiping the inquisitor from the battlefield.

The bikes and assault marines wipe the last of Tyranoc’s forces on this flank.

In a Hail Mary attempt at victory, Corporal ‘Gramps’ Lockyer positions to take a shot at Greyfax.

The terminators and last tactical marine prepare to make a last stand on the other hill.

The techmarine moves off on his own to dismantle the rhino hiding in the jungle.

Gramps lands an expert shot and disintegrates Greyfax.

The techmarine busts the rhino as the game finishes.

And at the very last moment, Tyranoc’s forces score 6 extra VPs from killing Greyfax and the rhino, pushing them just one point ahead of Greyfax’s side and scoring them victory! An exciting and bloody match, and as close as it gets, great game to my opponents and team mate!
